Terminal Five, Heathrow Airport, Middlesex
England
Masterplan
and airport
1989
- 2016
RRP
won the invited competition for a new terminal, Terminal 5, at Heathrow
International Airport in 1989.
Terminal
5 will be a new terminal between the runways at the west end of Heathrow.
It will have 60 aircraft stands and serve 30 million passengers per year
when complete, making it one of the largest terminals in the world. Provision
is being made for a New Generation Large Aircraft of 85m wingspan which
will carry up to 800 passengers. The first phase for 10 million passengers
will open in 2002, with the remainder opening in phases until 2008.
The
terminal will be used primarily by British Airways, combining domestic
and international flights under one roof. It will be the Gateway to the
UK and Europe, and a major transfer hub.
Terminal
5 consists of a core of 200,000 sq m, and two remote satellite buildings
of about 75,000 sq m each. The buildings are connected by an underground
passenger transit system and by an automated baggage handling system. The
functional planning of the buildings resolves a complex facility into one
that will be straightforward and enjoyable for people to use, and cost
effective to construct.
The
Core Building is characterised by a soaring wave form roof floating above
transparent glass walls. It is set in generous landscaping and rises above
terraced parking, hotel and office structures. Terminal 5 aims to make
a positive contribution to the landscape without being obtrusive.
Terminal
5 will celebrate the magic and excitement of travel, and be a landmark
building for the 21st century.
The
project is currently the subject of a Public Inquiry until summer 1997.
Start on site is expected in 2000.
